View Full Version : Manual Steering box S-10
I need a manual steering box for my GN. I believe S-10's have them and they will fit. My alum Flaming River box apparently doesn't like wheel stands
Call Cleveland auto wrecking and talk to Eddy. They are located right out of Hubbard.

I always get them from chucks junkyard, normally charges 20 or 25 bucks and they sell only tight ones, if its sloppy he won't sell it.
I got mine for 25 bucks up here in Greenville last year too. Just depends who your dealing with.

I a manual brake setup off an S-10 for my camaro too.
I'll pay you to pick up a box and the manual brake setup, if you are already going. I've been considering ditching my Powermonster. Let me know. I have no idea who Chuck is or were they are at.
Thanks

I'll probably go early next week. Hopefully they have that many, the boxes are easy to come by, the brakes are alittle more scarse.

Another place they have a lot of s10s, g- and b-bodies is Feezles. I was down there the other day. Saw 3/4 of a Cosworth in amongst the g bodies.

Hey Mr Vega, I helped BigDog change his brakes to manual on his Camaro this spring, it didn't cost anything. Don't know if it will work on other cars but you guys might want to read on. Remove the vacume booster from the master cylinder, might take some breaking stuff in the canister to get the brake rod loose mine did but you won't need the canister anyways. You can reuse the stock brake rod, it fits ok. Just remount the master cylinder on the little steel bracket that bolts to the firewall an your set, I didn't even have to open a line or bleed the breaks. It was that easy on a Camaro an probably simalar on other GM cars. Will give ya a lot more room under the hood too. If ya have any questions ask me or BigDog, tween the two of us we prolly will remember some bits an pieces for ya.

damn i just threw all that stuff away. as a side note pay attension to the rod position on the pedel. on s-10's you want the top for manual and botom for power. and not all have provisions to set it up right so try to take the pedle and hardware too. maby duuuuuh but just a problem i ran into.

Good point on the bolt hole, You could possibly drill another one if ya wanted more mechanical leverage. I know my Camaro only had one hole.

if you go to maliburacing.com then go to the tech section theres a article on converting g-bodies to manual brakes, it's pretty much the same for most cars though. One guy did as Z28 did and then they show the other way buying all new parts also. I believe the one guy drilled a hole in the pedal to move the rod because he used the stock rod as z28 did.
I'm going to get a manual m/c from autozone and reuse my rod from my power set up. :book:
I switched my Monte over to manual brakes last year and it was one of the best thing i have ever done to my car, not including motor. One thing no one has mentioned is that the bore in the master cylinder is usually smaller on the manual master, smaller bore = more pressure. That along with a raised hole on the brake pedel gives you less pedal effert. I have catalogues that cover 70-88, give or take a few years, if you would like i could check your power to manual bore size if it was offerd both ways from the factory. Give me year and make, or something that is equal, you would like to compare.
As example, 74 Monte manual bore size is 1 inch bore, power bore size is 1 1/8. There is no manual master listed for my car but I had 2 holes in the brake pedal, so i relocated my rod to the raised hole. There is an ideal pedal ratio for manual brakes, which i can't remember off hand, if you have to drill a new hole, i could find that ratio also if you need it.

you also need to be sure that when the pedal is at full retraction that the rod will not fall out of the back of the mastercyl. or you could be in for one wild ride. :eek2:

They make a clip for just that reason. You could also use the rubber boot that comes with a new master cylinder. It does the same function. My buddy had that happen at dragway 42. HE BOUGHT THE CLIP. Don't count on the brake light switch to stop the pedal from retracting all the way.
