Who is, and who ain't? Where are we meeting at?
Not going to race today. Broke the 3.00 low gearset in the tranny. But not to great of a loss, been thinking of changing to a stock 2.46 first gear or maybe a 2.75 to help with tire spin since these stroker motors make decent torque. But a friend has lent me a tranny so i will be at Thompson on Sunday. It has a stock 1st gear so this will help in my decison on what 1st gear to go with. Hope to see many Knights there.

My schedule for the following week, Tuesday Dragway 42, Friday Dragway 42, and Sunday Thompson again. Come to think of it, that is my schedule untill the tracks close.

Brad, a few guys standing around your car noticed you reved the hell outa your car as soon as you started it (cold) on the trailer. Do you think perhaps that may have been the cause of the potential rod knock? Oil is thick during start up and can't always get to all the lil clearances at high rpm's when it's dead cold. just my 2 cents. I hope everything is ok and maybe the converter bolts came loose or something but that was a hell of a good pass off the trailer!

I thought that a rod was trying to exit through the side of my block once, but as craig stated, it ended up being loose converter bolts. You may want to check that out 1st before pulling the engine.

in any case.. jim if you would of watched it u would of said ILL it runs like shyt.. we tried gettin it right but it hates me and just was grumpy..
i love the pits scene and track scene.. i soo missed it without my car but it was nice hanging with the Y town guys and working on the car having people around i just wish it wasn't 34 degree's out .. Also norb and i spoke today how come theres no big motor head people in erie that use their cars like y town.. erie guys have "fast cars" in theory but u never know y town you say hey its fast lets prove it.. thast why i want to move there, just wish i could find a good job.

not a bad theory mr. bd but i dont think thats it i think it might be a piston slapping i had a little problem with one of the wrist pins on assembly it went in a bit tight i think thats the culprit but i will see this weekend i am pullin her on friday. i also think i have a problem with the msd or msd distributor after a pass it trys to stall then stalls and wont start back up untill it sits for awhile and its still hard to start but finally does also when i shut the car off the tach goes all the way to 9,000 and sits there till i start it up again, also on inital start up this only happened 2 times i shut the car off and it stayed running by it self for a few seconds then shut off , does anyone have an msd tester to check the box and distributor? or i heard they will rebuild the boxes and distributors for a fair price? im still looking for the guy that was taking pics of cars leaving the starting line??? someones gotta have some info on this guy?

The dude taking the pictures drives a black Silverado with a cap on it. No digital BS so if you want a pic that he took on 10-9-05, you have to go back up and see him on 10-16-05. He has to develop them, and takes them back with him the following weekend.

ok well first of all a few good pieces of info and a few ..welll.. anyway the tach problem is not a ground if it wasnt grounded it wouldnt work properly the tach problem is caused by radio noise or noise in the electrical system which means the wire from the dist. to the msd box is running in a harness next to a 12 volt wire or its near spark plug wires that wire should be isolated. so fixed that problem , tested the msd box its fine tested the pick up with an ohm meter heres a tip readings should be between 400-1400 ohms cold and hot hot meaning heat it up with a hairdryer or heat gun to simulate engine temp. totaly rebuilt the distributor cleaned all the rust and scale off of the reluctor. now the knock issue is the rod bearings on cylinders 7 and 8 somebody will be getting a very nasty phone call monday!! those 2 bearings are basically submerged in oil all the time so its not lack of oil and the clearances were dead on the money! all other bearings look ok number one has a little wear on it other than that all else looks good probably gonna need a new crank since this one is brand new and is already .0020 under on the rod journal and .0010 on the mains!!! what a fricken fiasco!!
Brad, 7&8 being submerged in oil is not good enough, they need pressure to live. Don't say that to your machinest, he will look at you funny. Sorry about your bad luck, you will get it figured out, and when you do that thing is gunna screem. Not been a good year for me either.

Thanks for the confidence jim i appreciate it.. i had over 40psi of oil pressure going down the track and 40-60 psi from 1500 rpm and up at an idle i had around 25 so i think the high pressure spring will go in the new pump. but welp next year it is and without a complete car to rebuild like i did this year and only have to wrench on the motor this winter (maybe an antiroll bar) i should be out in the spring!! hopefully!! hey on a side note if anyone goes back up to thompson this weekend see if that guy has any pics of my car leaving im trying to see how bad it twisted i will reimburse you with interest! thanks.

So what do you think caused this rod knock? You said clearances were dead on.

10-17-2005, 07:19 PM
OH BOY DID THIS ONE SCREW UP BIG TIME!! :boohoo: i now need a new crank,1 piston, camshaft, recon. the rods(hopefully),align hone, cylinder hone, and rings, also have to check for a bent valve since one smacked a piston due to bearing failure which brought the piston closer to the valves, cause of death still undetermined only conclusion from dietz and me is possibly didnt get all the shavings out of the oil cooler and lines??? everything was assembled correctly and oil pressure was there, no other explanations yet and as for you guys' so called dead rev.... not possible it wasnt super cold out as in 30 degrees or below and it only went to 5500 rpm which ive done for years and never had a problem. but oh well all i can say is back to the drawing board and maybe ill sneak a few bigger parts in her for next year ( hmmm.. maybe a roller for starters). I will be at norwalk to spectate and help anyone who needs it or if anyone needs something to use to get them going for norwalk let me know if i gots em you may use em god knows i have no use for them right now!

"and as for you guys' so called dead rev.... not possible it wasnt super cold out as in 30 degrees or below and it only went to 5500 rpm which ive done for years and never had a problem."
Lemme get this straight, you see nothing wrong with dead revving a cold motor regardless of outside temp? You will continue to do this throughout your racing career as well? I swear to GAWD I am not being condasending here, I just want to know your feelings on this topic. I also want to know why you do that, maybe there is a horsepower secret I don't know about yet.

10-18-2005, 09:18 AM
the motor wasnt cold and it was running fat so i cleared the motor sheesh i gues i put that in the wrong context its not like i rev it all the damn time!considering my last engine went 4 seasons without a tear down and was still ok when i sold it! however this could be payback! lol in any case probably gonna have to get splayed mains,we also noticed the main caps were walking a bit. anyone have any comments on having the crank repaired (as in adding metal and regrinding like a cam) or just buy another one?

10-18-2005, 10:11 AM
mmmm... unfortunately i am sure that crank was a chunk of change but i would have to recommend a replacement much more over trying to add anything to that one and have it reground, having the problems that u have had i cant imagine having that crank done and not worrying about the level of which the machinist ability to ground it perfectly hangin in my mind on the first fire next year i would be a nervous wreck, and honestly i have never heard of anyone doing that ever. plus with a new one you will have the ability to have it turned a couple of times hopefully not to need it done for a couple of years but the room to keep it in good shape is there if you need it. i am only assuming here but i would have to think that your goal now is to eliminate as much as u can the possibility of this happening again, and because that crank is at the center of the problems in question i would want to donate that thing to the trophy pile of parts for our local artiste to make a grand and heavy piece for someone to try to carry off from the podium and display in their heavy duty shelf in their home :)
again just my 2 cents.
dubasracing
10-18-2005, 08:24 PM
well i have talked to several companies today and i am certain i will be purchasing a new crank and rods due to the fact ive been bitten twice with this rotating assembly, once my fault and the other well... thinking of trying eagle this time or going balls out with callies but undecided probably eagle since i had great luck with thier stuff over the years. as for a conclusion on the problem this time... i learned a few things today, oil cooler is not needed and furthermore there is also a gm service bulletin(concerning 4.3 suv with oil coolers) on this subject if there is any engine failure that shows any shavings in the oil it is necassary to replace the cooler and/or lines due to shavings cant be removed completely unless the cooler can be taken apart and visually cleaned. also ohio crankshaft noted that due to the oil cooler cooling the oil it might not have gotten warm enough to do its job properly lubricating the bottom end hence the bluing and hot spots. so it all is starting to make sense. getting rid of oil cooler and remote filter and going back to basics also possibly oil was too thin viscosity several companies recc. no thinner than straight 30 weight. i was running 10w30. very expensive lesson learned. as far as the crank being a trophy i think ill hang on to it for awhile as a reminder of what not to do!
