.... Also, Ford never lived by the small block/big block rule like The General did. The small block family are referred to as "Windsors" 260, 289, 302, 351 Windsor, the 335 series such as Kevin mentioned were your 351 Cleveland, 351M, 400, etc etc. Then there was a 385 series, 360, 390, 427, 428, etc etc. And lastly was the "big blocks" or as us Ford guys say, the FE family. (FE is the chemical symbol for IRON, by the by) Which is your 429, 460, and such. This is a basic lesson, there were other engines such as the infamous flatheads, Y-blocks, and in the 60's they had a habit of using beefier parts in the truck engines. To distinguish between the 2, they simply added 1 cubic inch to the truck engines. Thus the 352, 391, etc etc. <!--Signature-->

My partner in crime!!!!
In a nut shell, the mid 70's 351 and 400 smog engines were derived loosely from the kick #### 351 cleveland only with modifications to make them smog legal. Ergo the reference to modified 351 modified 400. M was just ford's way of identifying this engine family (351 windsor, 351 cleveland, 351 M). Obviously they did not have a 400 prior to this family of engines so you can see that modified 400 is not really accurate. Hope this makes everything clear as mud. The 351M family of motors has potential but most people just opt out for the windsor family because of the extreme potential along with the parts availability. As for the 429 460 family I think it is the 352 360 390 427 etc. engines are the ones classified as "FE". <!--Signature-->

I just got the 385 and the FE lables backwards. And you read too fast, I mentioned the flatheads, as well as the Y-blocks.
"The Ford FE engine was Ford's big block V8 engine range sold in the North American market between 1963 and 1976. It replaced the Ford Y-block engine and in turn was replaced by the Ford 385 engine series. Some claim the name means 'Ford-Edsel', while others insist the name meant simply 'Ford Engine'. This family of engines consisted of
1 352 ci
2 390 ci
3 406 ci
4 410 ci
5 427 ci
6 428 ci
6.1 Regular Ford 428
6.2 428 Police Interceptor
6.3 428 Cobra Jet
6.4 428 Super Cobra Jet
"The Ford 385 engine family was the American Ford Motor Company's final big block V8 engine design, superceding the Ford FE engine family. It was available in three sizes in production vehicles; 370 cubic inches (6.1 litres) in trucks only, 429 cubic inches (7.0 litres) and 460 cubic inches (7.5 litres). A 512 cubic inch (8.4 litre) crate engine was also available from Ford SVO. The engines were sold between 1968 and 1997." <!--Signature-->
